About FunAbacus

FunAbacus is a free learning website for children, parents, and teachers who want to explore the Japanese abacus, also called the Soroban, in a clear and practical way.

Who Runs FunAbacus

FunAbacus was founded by Bhargava Reddy Kapireddy, a parent who started teaching the Soroban at home after watching their own child lose confidence with school math. Moving real beads made numbers concrete, and practice turned into play. FunAbacus is the site that grew out of those home lessons, written so that other families and teachers can follow the same path for free.

How Our Lessons Are Made

  • Lessons follow the standard Japanese Soroban method: one heaven bead worth 5, four earth beads worth 1, and the “small friends” (5) and “big friends” (10) complement rules.
  • Methods are based on long-established Soroban references such as Takashi Kojima’s books, listed on our References page.
  • Every worked example is checked step by step on our interactive Soroban board before it is published.
  • Pages are reviewed and corrected when readers report a mistake — please tell us if you find one.

What Learners Can Do

  • Learn Soroban structure and bead movement.
  • Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Use an interactive Soroban board for hands-on learning.
  • Generate printable practice tests and worksheets.
  • Try playful activities and timed games that build confidence with numbers.

Who It Is For

The site is designed for young learners (roughly ages 5–12) with guidance from parents, guardians, or teachers. It can also help beginners of any age build number sense and mental math confidence.

Free, With No Sign-Up

Everything on FunAbacus is free and needs no account. The site is supported by a small number of family-safe Google ads. Ads are non-personalised unless a visitor chooses to allow advertising cookies, and we never ask children for personal information.

Learning Path

A good starting path is Techniques, then Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. Learners can then use the Printable Manual, Practice Tests and the online abacus for regular practice.
